Description

PRODUCTION
100% red dog of old vineyards. Passed grapes on foot in granite, aging 12 months in French oak barrels (100% of them used). Bottled in August 2021.

Terroir
The Douro despite being a very old region still has, thanks to its great dimension and enormous diversity of terroirs a lot to explore. Quinta de La Rosa is a good example of this diversity, with vineyards from about 100 m, next to the river in the imposing Vale do Hell, to 500 meters altitude in the vineyard of Lamelas. We also have several nascent, north and south solar exhibitions and great diversity of castes. Always with a privileged view of the Douro River, all fifth grapes are letter A - the best that the region has to offer.
Poor and schist soils, combined with a very varied topography, favor full -bodied wines with great levels of minerality, acidity and freshness. This combination of complexity and power, which is achieved when we have good maturation, and so characteristic elegance and freshness in our fifth have made our wines famous. Our wines are elegant in the expression of terroir without exaggeration in maturation, extraction, tannin or wood.

VINTAGE
Abundant rainfall in the winter months replenished the water table, which was good for the vineyard. But unfortunately luck was not on our side, and on May 31 we were hit by a strong hailstorm. Our Vedeal vineyards were the ones that suffered the most where we had a loss of almost 50% of our production, which is very unusual. The rest of our vineyards were not affected.
While most western Europe burned, the Douro has experienced a relatively fresh summer with normal temperatures. By the end of August we had a few days of extreme temperatures, but on the 28th the heat had already soothed giving ideal maturity conditions. It was exciting to see our newly planted vineyards begin to produce especially the Alvarinho who was vindicated on August 26. A complicated and time-consuming harvest was followed by rain periods. Fortunately, we are small enough to start and stop the vintage, making sure we reap the grapes only when they are ready. Finally we ended on Monday, October 4th.
Thanks to good viticulture practices, the grapes resisted very well and, although Dachuva, there were virtually no signs of rotting. Our winemaker, Jorge Moreira, is pleased with the general quality.
