Description

Amber color, golden reflections and greenish hues. Sweet aroma of orange, green tea, rose petals, hazelnuts, honey, cinnamon. On the palate, lightness and freshness in the sweet notes, very long finish.

Winemaking:
This wine originates from the Catarina and Nenas vineyards, where the 2002 harvest, a late year, took place on September 4th, 2002. In June 2003, aging began in a greenhouse where the wine remained until bottling. The winemaking process follows traditional regional practices common to fortified wines made from the Moscatel de Setúbal grape variety, which involves a short fermentation in contact with the skins – a fermentation that is then stopped by the addition of selected grape brandy. The wine and brandy remain in contact with the skins, in maceration, during the following winter. After the wine is racked and the must pressed, it is filled into oak barrels (with capacities between 180 and 225L), many of which were previously used for aging Malt Whisky. Our aging system in special warehouses, here called "greenhouses," is noteworthy, as it experiences high and varied natural temperature variations throughout the year. This aging system, similar to the "canteiro" method used for Madeira's generous wines, combined with the fact that no topping is done during the entire aging period, results in a gradual concentration of the wines and the formation of very complex and surprising aromas and flavors. This 2002 vintage Moscatel Roxo is our sixth 20-year-old Moscatel Roxo de Setúbal Superior.
