Description

Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially dedicated itself to the commercialization of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today the oldest family-owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia, it began, in the 1930s, with the prohibition of Port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to commercialize table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most celebrated wine brands of the Bairrada region was born – “Frei João” – and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão demarcated region.
