Bruichladdich Laddie

Since its creation in 1881, the Bruichladdich distillery has had an almost predestined life. Family feuds, recessions, industry cartels, disappointment, world wars, and sheer bad luck have been a problem; in many ways, it's a miracle the distillery is still operating today. In 1994, Bruichladdich was bought by Jim Beam Brands and finally closed, with all its employees laid off – on an island known for its limited job opportunities – only two men continued to rattle the locks. Budgie & John were the night watchmen during that period when it was closed. This fascinating little distillery has always been at the heart of the Rhinns community on Islay. Today, Bruichladdich is the largest private employer on the island, taking pride in job creation. Allan, the distillery manager, is one of the youngest in the Scotch Whisky industry.
