Description

The world-famous Maison Hennessy distillery was founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer in the service of King Louis XV, in the French city of Cognac, in the Charente region. Initially, Richard worked as a beverage salesman; today, Hennessy Cognacs are the best-selling in the world. According to French law, to receive the designation Cognac VSOP (initials of "Very Superior Old Pale"), the brandy must be produced in the French city of Cognac, from wines of specific grape varieties (98% of Cognacs use the Uni Blanc grape), be double distilled with a maximum alcohol content of 72% ABV, and aged for at least 4 years in French oak barrels. Hennessy VSOP cognac was created in 1817 after the then Prince Regent of the United Kingdom, and later King George IV, requested a "Very Superior Old Pale cognac." Since then, the initials VSOP have been used as a reference to the quality of the drink. It is composed of a blend of more than 60 eaux-de-vie produced from wines originating from four sub-regions of Cognac: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois.
