In 1839, Alexander Matheson sought the perfect location for the distillery, but his criteria were not the same as others. Many had already chosen the Speyside valley to build their distilleries, due to the already established transport connections and more hospitable climate. But Matheson was not swayed by comfort. His only concern was where he could find the best natural resources to make the best whisky. So he settled in an isolated area on the shores of the Cromarty Firth, exposed to the strong winds of the North Sea. In this wild land, Matheson started from scratch, building everything from warehouses to railways. Matheson defined his own path and ensured that this whisky always had its own unique and tasteful character. Others may try to replicate the artistry found in every drop of The Dalmore, but they will never succeed. This is because the maturation process is completely unique. The Dalmore is matured in two precious wooden casks: ex-bourbon American white oak barrels and exclusive aged sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass.
