The Botanist is a truly unusual gin. It's made in small batches of botanicals from the island of Islay and produced by one of the most famous distilleries, especially in the production of Malt Whisky, Bruichladdich.
It is the only gin made on the island and is characterized by its unique aroma, obtained through 22 locally selected and hand-picked botanicals. These botanicals are what inspire its name.
The botanicals are slowly distilled in a still – aptly named "Ugly Betty" – one of the last remaining stills that allows for three different distillation stages. The distillation takes approximately 17 hours, four times longer than the average whisky distillation. The gin is distilled after the overnight maceration of the nine base botanicals – which include seeds, juniper berries, various fruit peels and roots – and then "purified" using spring water from Islay. This vapor, obtained from the alcohol distillation infusion, passes through the basket containing the 22 botanicals. It is this distillation that gives Botanist gin its characteristic flavor, allowing the most delicate aromas to be incorporated into the gin. The flavor of Botanist Gin is influenced exclusively by the botanicals used – no essences, oils or aromas are added.
Typically, The Botanist gin and tonic is made with a mint leaf and a lemon peel.
