The grapes for Redoma Branco come from old vines on the right bank of the Douro River, located at an altitude ranging from 400 to 600 meters. These vineyards are predominantly planted with the Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho, and Gouveio grape varieties. Their mica schist soils give rise to wines with high minerality, delicate character, and great freshness.
WINEMAKING
In recent years we have witnessed greater climate variability and a higher frequency of extreme phenomena, such as the heat waves and intense rainfall that characterized the year 2022 in the Douro region.
Given how we naturally work at Niepoort, this climatic variability has a significant impact on the final profile of the wines, and as such, this year was one to remember...
The harvest at Quinta de Nápoles began on August 4th with the short-cycle grape varieties, and on August 12th we started harvesting the white grapes.
The grapes for Redoma come from old vines on the right bank of the Douro River, at altitudes between 400 and 600 meters. These vineyards are predominantly composed of Mica Schist soils, which, combined with the complex blend of typical Douro grape varieties, result in delicate wines with freshness and minerality.
Following careful selection at the sorting table, a delicate pressing and cold settling for 24 hours took place. Alcoholic fermentation occurred spontaneously in 228 and 500-liter French oak barrels, where it rested for approximately 8 months.
TEST NOTES
This Redoma is an excellent example of the Douro's potential to produce fresh, straightforward, and uncomplicated white wines, without neglecting the characteristic complexity of the old vines, terroir, and mica schist soils of the Douro.
The nose begins subtle and delicate, with hints of citrus and fresh herbs, and soon evolves into notes of hazelnuts and pear.
On the palate it is structured and displays excellent acidity. The finish is long and almost spicy. This classic Douro white wine is an excellent example of balance and aging potential.
