Description

VINIFICATION: At our Port winemaking centre, in Vale de Mendiz, the Bioma grapes are trodden by foot in granite vats, with 100% stems. After fortification with wine brandy, Porto stabilizes during the winter. In spring, the wine is transferred to our cellar at Quinta de Nápoles and placed in pipas (traditional 550l barrels). In the case of Niepoort's Classic Vintage, and most other Vintage Ports, the wines are transferred to Vila Nova de Gaia, where they are aged in large vats and vats. The use of barrels instead of large barrels and vats was inspired by the “old days”, when wine was shipped in barrels to England. In addition, we bottle Bioma “Vinha Velha” in the third year after the harvest, instead of until the end of the second year. This means that we offer Bioma one year later than the classic Vintage Port. 2009 was marked by low levels of precipitation during the ripening season and extremely high temperatures from mid-August through most of the harvest.

TASTING NOTES: Deep red color, with a red/purple edge. Aroma with notes of dark chocolate, along with young black fruits and a wonderfully fresh wine; on the palate, it reveals a magnificent rustic character and very well integrated black fruits. A fantastic combination of elegance and strength.
