After dedicating nearly 50 years of his life to Douro winemaking, and a few years before his death, José António Castro Ramos Pinto Rosas decided to fulfill his last dream: to create the "perfect estate" for the production of Port and Douro wines.
After a long and detailed study of the Douro Demarcated Region and with the help of topographic maps, José Rosas found a property of about 20 hectares in the Upper Douro near Vila Nova de Foz Côa, which, due to its characteristics (location, altitude, sun exposure, soils, etc.), he considered to have the ideal conditions to produce superior quality wines.
He bought the property in the early 1990s and, at 72 years old, decided to apply all the know-how he had acquired throughout his career. He planted a vineyard of about 8.5 hectares, with selected grape varieties (massal selection), on very hard, schistous and "virgin" soil where this type of crop had never existed before.
The decision (unique until then) to plant an estate with approximately 80% Touriga Nacional led JARPR to "christen" the estate with the name Touriga. Although this grape variety is very low-yielding, José Rosas considered it, even then, to be one of the noblest in the region due to the quality of the wines that came from it.
The remainder was planted with the Tinta Roriz grape variety.
Today, Quinta da Touriga is managed by his son Jorge, who decided to continue his father's dream, giving a new impetus to the property's history. In 2004, he completed the construction of a modern winery, which was awarded first place in the 2006 "Douro Architecture Prize". Currently, limited quantities of two wines with the Douro Controlled Designation of Origin are produced: Puro and Quinta da Touriga-Chã, now recognized by the specialized press as one of the best wines produced in the Demarcated Region.
Produced mainly from the Touriga Nacional grape variety, combined with Touriga Franca, this is a wine with a deep color and good concentration, with aromas of wild berries, elegant and fresh on the palate, with very well-balanced acidity and oak notes, and a long and persistent finish. Good aging potential.
