Sandeman Porto Founders Reserve is produced using the traditional Port wine method. The hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermentation, at a controlled temperature, with skin maceration to extract the best components. The addition of wine alcohol at the ideal moment establishes the balance between the body and bouquet of the wine. This moment is chosen by the winemaker following rigorous control of fermentation temperatures and densities, the latter depending on the grape variety, the stage of maturation, and the desired final sweetness. After the harvest, the wines remain in the Douro Valley until the following spring, when they are transported to Vila Nova de Gaia and enter Sandeman's centuries-old cellars for aging in oak casks, as required by the traditional Port wine aging system. Over the years, the wines are carefully tasted and analyzed by the winemaking team, who also make all necessary corrections and prepare the final blend to maintain the style and character of Sandeman Porto Founders Reserve. The selected wines are generally between 3 and 5 years old, resulting in a mature and intense wine with an average age of 4 years. The final blend is filtered and cold-stabilized before bottling.
